What to expect

The Czorsztyn Lake loop is Poland's ultimate Zakopane e-bike day out — a 36 km circular route around Jezioro Czorsztyńskie that combines easy e-cycling with some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in the country. You'll ride with the Tatras, Pieniny, and Gorce mountains as your backdrop for most of the day, with the sparkling lake right by your side.

Starting from Harklowa at the STARTVELO bike base, the route follows the Velo Czorsztyn and Velo Dunajec cycle paths — mostly dedicated, traffic-separated paths on quiet tarmac roads. Navigation is intuitive and well-marked, making this an ideal route even for those new to longer cycling days.

The terrain is mostly flat with just one notable climb at Falsztyn — a short but steeper section on the southern shore. Otherwise, this is gentle, relaxed riding that's genuinely accessible to families, casual riders, and anyone picking up a Zakopane e-bike for the first time. You'll pass through charming villages including Dębno (home to a stunning UNESCO-listed wooden church), Frydman, Falsztyn, and Niedzica before the optional but highly recommended ferry crossing to Czorsztyn.

The ferry between Niedzica and Czorsztyn runs from May 1 to September 30 and is the highlight of many riders' days — a short boat crossing between two castle-crowned shores. After crossing, the northern shore leads back to Harklowa. Allow 3 to 6 hours depending on your pace and how many stops you make. Whether you ride a Zakopane e-bike or a standard hybrid, this route is one you'll be talking about long after you've returned the bike.

The ferry crossing

One of the most memorable parts of this Zakopane e-bike route is the short boat crossing between Niedzica and Czorsztyn. You ride your bike onto the gondola and glide across the water with both castles in full view — an experience that transforms a great cycle ride into an unforgettable one. The crossing slightly shortens the overall loop, cuts out a climb, and adds a fantastic extra dimension to the journey. Highly recommended.

Frequently asked

Do I need a Zakopane e-bike for this route, or will a standard bike work?

A standard bike works perfectly well on this route — the terrain is mostly flat and the Falsztyn climb is manageable. That said, a Zakopane e-bike makes the day more relaxed, especially for families, older riders, or those who want to focus more on exploring and less on pedaling. E-bikes and standard bikes are both available to rent on the day of the adventure.

The official estimate is 4 hours 30 minutes, but most riders take between 3 and 6 hours depending on pace and how many stops they make. If you plan to visit the Dębno church, take the ferry crossing, and stop for food along the route, expect 5-6 hours for a relaxed day out.

The ferry between Niedzica and Czorsztyn is optional but highly recommended. It operates seasonally from May 1 to September 30. Outside of this window, you’ll complete the full loop around the lake by road. The ferry crossing is a separate cost payable on the day, so bring cash just in case.

Especially if you rent an e-bike, this route is quite leisurely for cyclists with little practice. The route is largely separated from roads and traffic, and the pavement is smooth and easy to ride on. And if you’re coming with a small child, there is an optional bike trailer attachment!

Harklowa is around 35 minutes by car from Zakopane. There’s a large car park at the STARTVELO bike rental base, so you can drive, park, and cycle from there. We can also help arrange transport — just let us know when you book.

We had a wonderful day with our child thanks to Start Velo! We rented an electric bike and a child trailer – everything was spotlessly clean and well-maintained. The equipment was perfectly prepared, without any faults.
