What to expect

Dunajec river rafting from Zakopane is one of the most iconic day trips in southern Poland. This rafting tour takes you through the heart of Pieniny National Park on a traditional wooden raft surrounded by limestone cliffs that rise hundreds of meters above the sparkling emerald waters of the Dunajec Gorge.

After getting picked up from your accommodation, your first stop is Niedzica Castle — a stunning medieval fortress perched above the Czorsztyn Reservoir. You'll have free time here to explore the castle grounds, visit the Miniature Park, and admire the views. From there, you'll continue to the launch point at Sromowce Wyżne, where the wooden rafting begins.

For approximately two hours, you'll drift along the Dunajec River Gorge on a traditional wooden raft — the same style of vessel highlanders have used on this river for centuries. The route follows the Slovakian border, with the river streaming between impressive rock formations, dense forest, and occasional glimpses of the Trzy Korony (Three Crowns) peak above. Along the way, you may pass a beautiful wooden church on the riverbank.

On the return journey, there's a stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Tatra Mountains, where you'll sample authentic sheep's cheese (oscypek) and taste traditional highlander liqueurs. It's the perfect way to end a day that combines natural beauty, history, culture, and a unique Dunajec River rafting experience... all pre-planned for you.

Frequently asked

Is the rafting safe for children?

Traditional rafting is calm and slow-paced, absolutely safe for children. There is no white water in this trip and you’ll be guided by experienced rafters.

Possibly a light splash, but you won’t get soaked. It’s a gentle drift, not a whitewater rafting experience. Bring a light jacket in case of spray or cooler temperatures on the water.

The Dunajec River forms the Polish-Slovak border. While you won’t technically cross into Slovakia, ID is required for all participants on this section of the river.

A €10 deposit per person is required when booking to secure your spot. The remaining balance is paid in cash on the day of the trip.

Light rain doesn’t stop the rafting — the gorge is spectacular in all conditions. In case of severe weather or dangerously high water levels, the trip will be rescheduled or refunded.

I’ve been to Zakopane in winter but we decided to try summer, turns out it was even better! Hikes were epic and the Zakopane Summer team was really helpful and welcoming. Only stayed for 3 days, but we got a lot out of the trip so at least i have something to look forward to for next time. The Koscieliska caves were a highlight.
